VIOLET OON’S KITCHEN adds a gourmet flair to local Singaporean comfort food.
DESCRIBED IN ONE WORD
Familiar – The menu was a nice combination of local favorites and asian-inspired western dishes. There were items like chili crab pasta, truffle fries, and home style bread pudding that all seemed very “gourmet” but still had a nice, familiar local touch.
Chicken Lemak – I appreciate the refined presentation of this local and familiar dish. It was refreshing to experience it in a new way. I thought flavors were milder and “foreigner friendly.” It wasn’t the best chicken lemak in the world, but I stilled loved it.
Pulled Beef Rigatoni – This came recommended by our server and I was quite happy with it. The pulled beef was cooked perfectly and was smothered in flavorful tomato sauce, both topping the rigatoni. It was filling and yummy!
I liked the interiors of the restaurant. I felt it really complimented the type of food they served. It had local “coffee shop house” elements like marble top tables, and colonial style fixtures. But it was also trendy, cool branding, big mirrors, floor to ceiling windows and western pastries nicely displayed on the counter. Their menu was scribbled on the walls and mirrors, the door was left open to make it feel alfresco, and they had a tree right in the middle of the restaurant.
The menu. The combination of dishes they offer is interesting. For a Filipino/American like myself, I thought they had something for the brave at heart as well as options for someone who may want to stay on the safe side.
